I have the same noise that it sounds like it comes from the diff

the worst time that it happen is when i back up and push in the cluth to stop the whole car jercks and a loud dull noise comes from the back

could this be caaused by low fluid in the diff? or that the whole diff may be waring out (do not have LSD yet)

i have the exact same problem. I just put in my VLSD a couple of weeks ago and i started to notice the thumping noise. i hear it when i'm about to put out of my parking lot and only when i'm turn left or right at the time. (1st or 2nd gear: normal driving)

I think landho got this one. it depends on the thump, if it feels like someone is hitting the back of your car with something than its the bushing, cause your whole rear is actually moving around from the on/off torque and hitting its starting and stopping points. if it is more like a loud click that has gotten bad, that is your rear being worn, cause its seal/bearing is worn so it wiggles inside the nose of the rear and has to take up the slack and then it is all released when you let off.

I have had the same problem with my 240SX.

For my car, it turned out to be the open differential (Which had messed up output shafts).

That's not necessarily true for your car. But it is a possibility.

Lift the rear of your car. Take the parking brake off and keep car in neutral.

Grab a rear wheel, and turn it from left to right really fast.

If you hear a noise, it could be either your:
- Axle
- Wheel nut
- Output shaft (part of differential)

Turn the car on while the rear is lifted. Try to duplicate the noise by shifting into first or second.

Have somebody listen to where it comes from.

It could be from your transmission (my transmission makes a *POP* noise, for example.. occasionally).

Or your driveshaft (when it engages/spins to engage, it could be making a sound)

Or your differential (some part of it)

Or even your subframe (not bolted correctly, worn out, chassis piece knocking)

Or a suspension piece due to the thrust.

But since you say it happens on shifting (gear engagement), it has to be some part of your drivetrain.

Good luck on checking it out.
