Illegal Engine Swap

Hi,
I've read that swapping a SR engine is illegal? Why is that? Is it because of the emission or what?

As I remember, registeration to the DMV is needed when swapping an engine. How to get away with this problem? Letting the DMV knows that you got an illegal engines wap?

You gotta have a friend (good friend) hehehe.... who owns smog check place....other wise your car can't pass smog nor re-register. Actually I heard stock SR20DET CAN pass emission. But not too sure.... good luck. J SAGANO

Jay C. Sagano,

Thanks for the input. Is that the only problem? That should not be difficult, right? I've heard that some shops will de-tune the engine to make the smog pass, isn't that true?

Hi, I talked to my friend who owns a local smog check place and he said that as long as your SR20DET is stock and runs not too rich/not too lean, you have no problem passin. but like I said you should have someone you can trust about your car. Someplace, they can simply say 'NO' and not even attempt to test it, because you did so called illegal swap, ya know what I mean ?? They just want to protect their image and their risk of involvement. They might lose their licenses once they pass you and you report to the consumer Affair report dept.
I own the company call "abflug" from Japan. Actually my friend's the owner of Japan division. I'm planning to open up for the USA distributor. Check out ......www.ab-flug.co.jp.......I was so surprise how popular it is here in the States with Silvias. I thought it was only for Japan....heehee..I was wrong. Too bad that we don't have Skylines here !!! It's HUGE in Japan, both Skylines and silvias. I have S15 in Japan, and believe me it's totally different ride feelings. talk to yo later..JAY

So, it is a LEGAL swap if it pass emission? Yes/ no?

Jay,

If you plan to open a shop, please do it in north CA.

Not many HUGE shops around here.

Did ABflug ever sell there drag supra. I saw it on ebay for awhile, but had forgot about it as of late if so whos the lucky owner and do you know if they'll be raceing it out here anywhere. I would hate to see it stuffed up in a collection or in someones garage simply for bragging points.

Hi, It is almost impossible to bring my S15 here. I can bring it and put it in my garage, that's about all I can do !! I mean, I tried evertying including calling MotoRex and they cannot legalize that car nor can meet the emission and EPA. Don't buy anything from MotoRex by the way, I know exactly where and how they get their skylines from. That's another story.........
Anyways, I prefer to have S15 for sure. I had GTR 33 and trade that in to get a new S15. GTRs are bit heavy for me...... Hard to drift and for drag, you need alot of power to push that car. But in Japan, GTRs are still the KING and still very popular. By the way the world drifting champion this year, he drives 2002 S15.
All I have done to my S15 is Greddy intercooler, 3.5 piping, Greddy exhaust, and Blitz pistons/rings and cam. Those are basic simple mods for those silvias and GTRs. I know it sounds alot of work, but that's nothing compare to others silvias. heehee......talk to you later.....JAY

Hi, sorry to tell you, but we don't have any plans to open up one in Northern area. Sorry !!! But, I'm sure we'll have accounts with some dealers from Northern cal.

Regards to SR20, I would swap it anyways......I'm sure there's away to pass that engine no matter where you go...
Talk to you later..JAY

Hi, our abflug car is in Japan right now. We though of sellin it, but like you said....whoever buys it, most likely put it in their garage and do nothin !! hahaha. We had a contract with HKS in Torrance too, so they can do maintenance service on that car. But, its' all good.....Besides, who wants to buy 9 sec. Supra for every day driven car ?!?!?! Well, I do !!!! heehee. Don't worry, we're building one right now...this time using on my S13 1991 240sx.
