NEED Help on buying new 240

Hey guys, well the time has come and a new 240sx is within my grasps of ownership but I need the help of you guys before making the deal official. I'm currently looking at a 1990 fastback model to buy for only $750. The owner says that the car runs and is driveable but has a loud knock and suggests the engine gets rebuilt. There is rust spots on the frame horns and a few other rusts spots here and there. I don't care about the rust spots, but I'm worried about the loud knock. What does it typically mean? Will this mean trouble in the future? I'm afraid that if I buy it, I'm just gonna end up in a money pit. But at the same time, with the way 240s have BLOWN up lately, I don't wanna pass on this incredible deal. WHAT SHOULD I DO??

p.s. Please reframe from posting "Swap with a sr20" as I'm strapped for cash and it really isn't an option at this time. I would rather get the stock engine fixed before doing any swappin'.
