what's the deal....widebody or not??

Okay guys, I have a question. I am looking at getting my 93 Coupe widened. I was looking to buy the rear fenders and have them molded. I have heard that they do this and then afterwards either cut out and weld in new supports or beat out the fender as to accomodate for the wheel clearance and to truly be functional as a widebody. I was down for this. No problem.

I took it to a shop this morning and they told me all the fiberglass ones are for is looks, and there is no way to do it, without weakening the structural intergrity.....unless. I have them do a "true" widebody, and cut the metal and weld in an additional piece.

This of course if WAY WAY more expensive. So I ask...HOW IN THE HELL? I know not all the cars I see with widebody are just fiberglass overlays with stock fenders completely intact underneath....are they? Nah...it just can't be. Most of em are running wider tires and everything....so I tell him.

"I would like to use a 9" wide rim....maybe 9.5"

He says "that's not a problem...9.5in will clear...just roll the lip and mold a flare instead."

"How much"....I ask

"$600 each side"....he says

I have seen a few of em that have just the fender flare lip, and it looks okay, but I am not convinced. I mean, it looks tight when it is a fat lip like on the M3's....I think.

Someone else has to be wondering the same thing as me. So does anyone out there have some pics of each...widebody coupes, and coupes with just the fender flare? If so please post em up so I can check it out, and also please tell me what you think...or if you have talked to any shops in the DFW area that has told you different. I just wanna get it all cleared up so I can make a choice and get it done.

for overfenders you just trim the existing fender, hammer it and rivet the sheet metal together.

then you slap overfender on, rivet rivet, done deal. well not that simple but its real pricey, especially if you do it yourself. the overfender covers your work anyway.

you can fit a 9.5 no problem on an s13 coupe, a pull or a roll would all you would need, depending on wheel offset. you can fit 10s no problem.

bubble flares arent my thing but it looks good in some instances. over fenders look much better on 240s.

you can fit that pretty easy.
Fiber Glass doesn't change structural integrity .. thats bull ****.
Adding fiber glass doesn't weaken the metal frame does it!?!?

Sounds like you need to find another shop those guys are a rip.

All you need to do is an easy roll on the fender, doesn't even matter if its not perfect, the wide fender will cover it.
Google search for "fender rolling"

just roll it yourself

hammer + heat gun + some of your time = rolled fenders

if you want it super duper smooth or to pull you can get/borrow a roller.
