Help a bit of a noob with "coilovers"

First off, can someone tell me if my understanding of what a coilover is, is correct: is a coilover basically a strut/shock and spring combined?

If so, do they require any special tools to install (eg.: spring compressor) or it is basically a matter of connecting them in the right places?

Are they meant for just racing or is it reasonable to use them in general and reliably for every day driving?

Thanks in advance

all you would need is some wrenches, no spring compressor is needed and they are perfectly fine for a dd.

unbolt top 3- 14mm(?) bolts
unbolt lower- 17mm(?) bolts
remove stock assembly
replace with new coilover unit
bolt in place

...well something like that

Replacing struts are so easy. I did the front in 30 minutes for both sides.

install isnt hard. usually they come assembled and its just a "bolt on job." most are fine for daily. depends on the spring rate tho. 6/8 are what im on right now. ive seen 10/12 and higher and im not so sure id want that stiff of a ride for bossier roads.

make sure they are properly pre-loaded and to the same height before you install the front and rear coilovers respectively.
