car doesnt start...electricals?

my car has the tendency to die from time to time...each time, it cranks but doesnt turn over. When i check out the car the next day, it works again.

This time, i was driving and the car suddenly died while moving, and i had to coast to the side of the road. At first, it cranked but didnt turn over. After a couple tries, it would click and occationally crank. (like click...click...click...weak crank). I assume its becuase i drained the battery trying to crank it, but the electricals in the car stopped working. Also, i tried jump starting the car...when i first cranked it, it turned over for a second and quickly died. After that initial crank, the car would only crank and not turn over.

i have a volt meter in the car...right before all the electricals in the car stopped working, the voltage was approx 9volts at the accessory position.

Since the car died while it was moving/running, im thinking its the alternator. Or maybe the battery cant hold a charge. I replaced the battery terminals with new/clean ones, so thats probably not the problem.

Anyone know wat would fix my problem?

when you turn your key to the on position
(not start) you should hear the fuel pump priming (a low hum sound)for about 2-3 seconds.

I vote alternator. The humming sound when you turn the key is the fuel pump priming...I did not know that's what that was. You learn something new almost everyday on these forums...cool!

its either your battery cant hold a charge or your alt crapped out, which would drain the battery. go recharge the battery or find a known good one. turn on the car and disconnect the ground. the alt should keep the car running even without a battery.
