Checked the 97-98 FSM's and it is in fact the IAT sensor.

For 95-96 models the IAT sensor was attached to the actual OEM airbox with 2 screws; even your generic aftermarket "Ebay special" intakes came with a MAFS adaptor which had provisions to mount the IAT onto it using the same factory hardware.

However the IAT for 97-98 looks to mount a different way.

You can get away with it hanging outside the intake stream, but it will affect your cars response somewhat, and it's possible that you might throw a CEL + ECU code if it reads out of its range... From what the FSM says, unplugging the thing entirely will definitely throw a CEL + ECU code.

My suggestion is to install the new intake, find a suitable spot on the air filter itself, and drill a hole for fitting the IAT. You can seal it in place with a little silicone. That should work out fine.

I was going to suggest drilling straight into the intake piping, but that would position the IAT sensor behind the MAFS - and it's supposed to be upstream, before the MAFS.
