If you've tried to find wider wheels in offsets below 40, you will know the advantages to having a 5 lug setup. There are more wheels available in 5 lug than in 4.
Unless you change the rear carrier, you won't need to make any shock changes (well, you would need to slightly enlarge the holes on the front struts).
If you go with the aluminum carriers on an S13, you will need to use rear shocks from an application that has the proper mounts. I haven't dug too deep on this, but I think you could use shocks from a Z32, or an S14 - they both have the proper lower mount, but I don't know about the length.

My friend did the swap on his S13 and then ran the wheels from a Z32 turbo.
Personally, I don't think it's worth it for me right now. My car is going to remain a street car, so I won't really want too much tire on there. 7" rims are suitable for my plans with the car.

Keep in mind, the Z32 aluminum uprights I've seen were leftover from my friend who did the S13 5 lug swap. He evidently didn;t feel like transfering the uprights.

Weight savings.
The Cusco part you're talking about is the upper lateral link, not the upright. With the Cusco upper links, you would still use the stock (cast iron) uprights in the rear.
You could use the Z32 aluminum pieces to give you a good loss of unsprung weight over the stock pieces.
Like I said, my buddy went through the work to convert all 4 corners of his S13 to 5 lug, but didn't go through the effort to install the Z32 rear uprights. Make your own conclusions from that.
