Rear Pad Help

Doing a pad replacement on the rear brakes and I need some help. I took off the slide pin bolts and the caliper bolts and the pads and the spring retainers fell off. I am trying to figure out how to put in the new pads. I know which way the retainers go in but every time a I try to put everything together it all falls apart. Am I supposed to put back the caliper , install the pads and then the slide assembly? Maybe swing one end of the slide away from the caliper?

I like to keep the main caliper bolts in and tight, and loosen the top of the 2 "slide" bolts as us call them (the ones with the rubber boots protecting the sliding pins).

From there, you can just pop the new pads in place. There are tools available at PepBoys or other stores that you can insert to help rotate the piston back into place (some rears you have to do this to get the new pads to fit). I suggest getting this tool, and rotating the piston back in, then use a clamp to hold it temporarily till the pads are in.

Then take off the clamp and swing thatpart of the break back into place and retighten the bolt you took out.

Shouldn't take more than 15-20 minutes per wheel.

Thanks jspaeth, I have the pistons back in but the problem is the 2 spring clips that that fit in the end of each pad. What is the best way to attach these. They seem to fall out!

I know exactly what your talking about, that **** is a b!tch to put back on. I forgot how I did it but I remember that I had to look at the other pads to see how they went. It just takes patience.

Yes I think I know what you are talking about......I always try to replace one pad at a time, so that the other pad holds the clips in place.....let us know how it goes

Ohhh okay, I remember.... first you have to put the clips on the caliper and then slide the pads in them very carefully, be carefull not to push it allthe way through.

Thanks Guys!
I installed the pads today after mounting the caliper 1st then installing the pads. I had to kind of angle the pad so that the bottom of the tabs slide in 1st then pop in the top using a flat blade to pry the retainer open. The torque member and slide pins went in last as instructed.
Great forum!

Even though you got it figured out, I'm moving this to the "Brakes" section.

It's really easy to do brake pads without taking the whole caliper off.

Like I said, if you just undo the top bolt that screws into the sliding pin (with the rubber boot on it to hold the grease in), you can swing the back part of the brake down and get to the pads with the caliper still on.

Glad you got em on though
