I think Wikd mentioned that you gotta take off the oil pan to get at the lower timing chain cover~ that entails dropping the front suspension or lifting the motor...

from what i can tell is the crank is either bent or out of round... shooting for out of round on the journals... i dont have my cam here at home so i dont have any pictures but i can tell you this... the number 3 rod journal is hammered pretty bad... there are oil grooves around the journals that are suposed to help oil the bearings... on the number 3 rod journal only half of that groove still remains... the grove is about 1/8th of an inch deep and it si ground down on one side... so it had to be pretty bad to start with...
i am going to do a na build up... this just set me back 1700 bucks... i hope to have the na motor built by september... and the ka-t done by december...
to answer the question about the lower timing chain cover... you have to get the oil pan off befor you can pull the cover on all of the dohc motors... there is no way to remove it with the oil pan in place... so it is either lift the car and pull the whole front suspention and cross member... or pull the motor...

pull the motor and take the pan off... metal shavings running around in your oil is not a good idea... the motor can be pulled rebuilt and reinstalled in a day if you have the skills to do it... i just did it on sunday and it was almost 90 degrees outside... beings how the car was in a friends back yard i had no shade and that sucked... but it can be done in no more than a weekend if you are new to the motor pulling game... i would just suggest that you have all of the parts you want to replace befor you get started... i had bearings rods timing gears tensioners and guides all ready to be installed befor i even started pulling the motor...
if you have a friend to help you you could even hone the block and re ring it as well... would have a totally fresh bottem end ready to go... it is just a suggestion but if you have the motor out might as well do everything you can...

it is a lot of work but worth it if you want to keep your car running... i love my 240 and have put up with no end of crap because i am building an import in the land of the american muscle car... a friend of mine tells me every day to stop playing with imports and get a real car... with some work you will have a motor that you know is ready to run for quite a while... nothing like building your first motor...
well im buying a ca18det in a couple months.. and was gona rebuild it and do all this work to it to make sure it was gona alst ...but i wont be droping it in till like next summer or around winter time.....but in the mean time..how far do i have to get the oil pan off to remove the lower timing cover.. what if i disconnected the mounts when i have the tranny off (doing a tranny swap) and raise it a few inchs will i be able to drop the oil pan far enough to remove the damn cover??? or does it have to come all the way off..thanks, for your help and please excuse my lack of manors its just that i dont have the moeny to be pulling my motor(im gona break stuff and havta replace it) and im affraid ill forget where **** went and ittl just make my car not able to be driven for like 2 months...

if you get the motor up about 12 inches you will be able to get the oil pan off or at least low enough to remove the front cover...it is a pain in the *** but yeah it could be done... it might be hard to get to all of the oil pan bolts but i dont see why it could not be done like that...
