I think they are charging to much for the install. Here's why

Nismo 2-way LSD- $899 on ebay
Greddy V-spec Intercooler- $600 on ebay
Greddy Gages X 3= $210 (figure it's about 70 a gauge)
driveshaft- $500
Red Top itself with uncut harness- $1,500-2,000
Aluminum Rad- $400
Turbo Timer- $100

So with just the mods I listed that brings you up to an approximate total of $4,710 dollars. Let alone the other's that are included. I figure roughly that the parts come out if the customer bought them for around $5,500 to $6,000. So that means that your paying them about $3,000 for the install. While I do think that they will have plenty of work to do, I still think that's high. The reason why it's a good situation for them is because when the have the engine out it's really easy to switch things like the exhaust manifold and such. It's like they're charging you for each individual install even though they take much less time with the engine out. So yeah I think your getting gipped for the price of the install, but you could probably talk them down a little.

Of course you could always just buy the parts and install it yourself...

twofotisx $3k in labor isnt expensive. You figure $100/hr x 30 that isnt bad at all for intstalling all those.
Even if it was $50/hr x 60 hrs. That is still all that still installed in just less than a weeks work.
I honestly believe he is getting a good deal if they are charging him $3K labor for all of that.

Project Cheap13:
When you put it like that I think it's a pretty good deal then. I [bold]never[/bold] get any work done on my car by shops. The only time my car goes into the shop is for an inspection. That's it. I really don't trust someone else to install my parts plus when I do it myself I gain a better understanding of my car. Between my friends and myself we have basically every tool you would ever need to work on cars. One of my friends is a full-time mechanic so yeah he has a shi7load of tools.

All of that was basically thrown out there to say that I know nothing about labor rates and what would be considered reasonable or high.

differentstroke: So if you don't have all the tools nessasary for the job and don't know anyone that does, I could see how you would have to take your car into the shop in order for this install to go through. Just make sure that you are willing to trust these guys and have heard that they provide quaility work for the money that you're paying them.

Still too much. I think the base labor charge on that whole setup should be only about $1500. And like you said twofotisx its the ease of having everything installed while the car is apart. If it were a shop that wanted to keep the customer they would see this and do most of the little installs for a small, small fee. If not free. Not charge you basic labor charges for each individual part.

Best thing for you to do is research it and do it yourself. Not only that but if they do something wrong and you have to take the car back more than likely they are going to blame you and try and charge more labor fees. Might as well set aside an extra grand to fix f@#! ups. Whatever the case good luck.

well... lets put it this way. my mechanic has only got 8 hours into my install. he has completely removed the old engine and completely installed the new engine, mounted the intercooler, powder coated the valve cover, installed maunual drive shaft and aslo converted my car to a manual... so i dont know how any shop is charging for 30 hours for an install.

just my opinion i could be totaly wrong but just putting that out there. and personally i think you are getting a great deal on what you are getting

That's pretty good in 8 hours. Like I haven't gotten my engine in yet but I plan on filming the whole thing. For a couple of reasons 1) if we fruck up it's all on tape 2) The video will be a really cool keepsake not to mention proof that my friends and I installed it and 3) I dunno... it's mostly because of the first two.

if you are mechanically inclined do it yourself. the parts for all that stuff is half as stated earlier. as for tools 1000 or less could get you all that is needed to do this job. that includes buying a engine hoist not renting it. i know this cause i own damn near every tool ill ever need and i swapped my engines along with countless others. if you do it right the tools arent very expensive just dont get really cheap tools. you could even pay someone to convert the harness and its still cheaper to do it yourself.

Install prices are going to vary alot. It's all about cost of living and overhead. A guy working out of his garage can bang out a swap with his only cost being his time. A shop has to rent/lease/pay payments on a shop, pay employees, insurance, etc. The shop will also mark up every part a little bit, this is standard for dealing with getting everything, as it takes time, time is money. I think a good friend and garage with the right tools is the best way to go. Get in there, get greasy, learn to do it yourself.
