1. Is this the top chain guide that can be removed safely?

2. Have anyone of you had any problems when removing the chain guide?

3. is it only two screws holding it on?

4. should I replace the screws or leave them off?

yes, it can be removed safely, it has two screws, you can either take them out or leave the screws in. i put mine back in, but in raines guide, it says just leave em out. doesnt matter, i guess.

 

i don't want to be the party popper but the "89 sohc doesn't have a top chain guide like the dohc nor does in have latch adjusters.

most likely it's your lifters. i don't know about sea foam i've never used it but if you do and leaks occur it will probably be from your front main seal which is not hard to replace.

 

I ve removed mine . . . IT DIDN'T GET RID OFF THE TICKING NOISE around 3K rpm...
I don't know what to say.....

might be the chain slapping or stuck lifters.

 

keep in mind that its only at 3k rpm
and by what i chekd the chain is on tight.
the chain guide didn't have any signs of rubbing or hitting by the chain...

now that i think about it i knew a guy with the same problem. i don't remember all the details but i think it had something to do with the egr valve and solenoid or bmp valve and solenoid.

 

hey man just so you no you cant do any adjusting on the valves they got hydrolic valve lifters so no adjustment but my car did the EXACT same thing at same rpm and everything if seafoaming it doesnt work didnt for me i tried you need to change the lifters if its possible to see which one is bad than you can just replace it. pull off you valve cover and rocker arms and push each if one is squeshy than it needs replacing they are about 50 bucks a peice god luck man hope it works out for ya.

follow up. . . .
I fixed my LOOSE TIMING CHAIN and a ratteling noice ! !This week end I performed a good cleaning to my engine. I Seafoam 'ed it. Put 1/3 of a bottle in my oil, 1/3 intake, 1/3 gas. drove it around the block, idled it for a while. let it rest for a day, idle it some more. then i changed the oil. I took my time (all day) to drain the old oil. I ran about a quart of new oil to push down the old oil out. I took off my valve cover and poured some oil through the timing chain while pushing in and out the tensioner. You can hear it squirt oil out. At first it was hard to push in but i worked it for a while and got it moving.

I filled it up with fresh oil (synthetic blend 10-40), fresh filter, fresh spark plugs, fresh valve cover gasket, and fresh gas filter.

It ran good!

THe timing chain didn't make the noise it made before, and it was nice and tight.

I even reduced (to almost gone!) a rattleing noice at 3000 RPM. I was guessing it was a sticky valve and now its almost gone.

I am extremely happy!
I even painted the valve cover!
